In 1994, a 30-year-old walked away from a top job on Wall Street to sell books out of a garage near Seattle. Six years later his company was losing more than a billion dollars a year, its shares were collapsing, and a Wall Street analyst warned it could run out of cash. Today it sells more than any other company on Earth. How did an online bookstore become a trillion-dollar empire?
This 15-minute animated documentary follows the whole story in cinematic painted scenes: Jeff Bezos's "regret test" at D. E. Shaw, the road trip west, Cadabra becoming Amazon, the 1995 launch and the 1997 IPO, and the dot-com crash that nearly killed the company. Then come the ideas that saved it and made it giant: the flywheel, the Marketplace and Prime, Amazon Web Services, the Kindle, robots and a delivery network of its own, Whole Foods, and the day it first touched $1 trillion.
It also looks fairly at the costs: warehouse injury reports and Amazon's response, the fight over the first Amazon union on Staten Island, and the FTC's antitrust case, before Andy Jassy takes over and Amazon bets on AI. The ending answers the title question with the four real reasons it happened.
